Colostrum Supplementation

Protein shake with the text colostrum supplementation over top.

This is a comprehensive overview of current research as of April 11, 2025, on bovine colostrum supplementation and its effects on human performance and immune function. The findings are mixed, with some studies indicating potential benefits, particularly in immune modulation and gut health, while others show limited or no significant effects on physical performance.

Summary:  While bovine colostrum shows promise in certain areas, particularly immune modulation and gut health, its effects on athletic performance are less conclusive, and at this stage, the evidence is insufficient to recommended.

1. Immune Function

  • Modest Immune Benefits: A systematic review of 10 randomized controlled trials involving 239 athletes found that bovine colostrum supplementation had minimal impact on serum immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG), lymphocytes, and neutrophils. PubMed

  • Reduction in Inflammation: A 6-month study on football players showed increased immunoglobulin G levels and decreased inflammatory markers with colostrum supplementation, though no significant effect on performance was observed. PubMed+1GQ+1

  • Enhanced Immune Response in High Training Loads: A 12-week high-dose colostrum supplementation study indicated improved immune response in athletes under intense training. PubMed

2. Athletic Performance

  • Limited Performance Enhancement: Research indicates that while colostrum may help protect against performance decrements during intensified training, evidence for direct improvements in body composition or physical performance is limited. PubMed+1PubMed+1

  • No Significant Effect on Exercise Performance: Some studies suggest that colostrum supplementation does not significantly enhance exercise performance in trained athletes. PubMed

3. Gut Health and Recovery

  • Improved Gut Integrity: Colostrum supplementation has been associated with reduced gut permeability and damage markers, particularly during periods of intense training. PubMed

  • Potential for Enhanced Recovery: Some evidence suggests that colostrum may aid in recovery by supporting gastrointestinal integrity and modulating the immune response. PubMed
